About this project
A solar quote should not be your first answer.
Before anybody counts panels on your roof, your JPS bill can tell us how much electricity you use, what each unit costs and when solar is likely to help. Jamaica Solar Check starts there—even when the honest answer is to buy less.
The short version: we do not sell or install solar. The calculator is free, the estimate is independent, and contacting a company is always optional.
Why it exists
The numbers should make sense before the sales call starts.
Most solar quotes begin with a product list. Jamaica Solar Check begins with the amount of electricity you actually use, the rate on your own JPS Jamaica bill, the sunshine in your parish, and when your household uses power.
That matters because a unit of solar electricity used in your home is worth much more than a unit sent back to the grid. A bigger system is not automatically a better one. Sometimes the sensible recommendation is fewer panels, a smaller battery, or no battery at all.

The calculator follows the electricity, hour by hour.

Your pattern of use
Daytime air conditioning, evening demand and outages all change what solar and a battery can do for your home.

An estimate for each hour
For each hour, we estimate how much electricity the home needs, what solar can supply and what the battery can store or provide.

Savings, not an installation price
The calculator estimates bill savings across the year. It also shows what installation price those savings could cover in three, four or five years, before loan interest, upkeep or replacements. It does not price an installation; that needs a site assessment and a written quotation.

Greg is a Cloud Engineer, a Jamaican/British citizen and a homeowner in St Catherine. He loves travelling and building useful technology; his interest in solar, technology, AI and EVs shapes the practical, homeowner-first questions behind Jamaica Solar Check.
He built the calculator and maintains its assumptions, source data and bill parser—so Jamaican households can begin with clear numbers before speaking to an installer.
The independence promise
What will not change when money is involved.
- The calculator does not favour an installer. Its answer comes from your inputs and the published assumptions, whether or not you ask for quotes.
- No one pays to make a system look better. Installer payments cannot change the estimated savings, payback or recommended size.
- Unhelpful truths stay on the page. That includes poor returns from exporting too much power and the extra payback time a battery can add.
- You choose when to contact a company. Running the calculator and making a shortlist sends no bill or contact details to an installer.
Limits
Useful, but not a roof survey.
Jamaica Solar Check is not JPS, the Office of Utilities Regulation or the Ministry of Science, Energy, Telecommunications and Transport. It is not a licensed electrical contractor, and its estimates are not financial advice.
A real quote still needs someone to inspect your roof, cable runs, electrical panel, shading and title paperwork. The calculator helps you arrive at that conversation with better questions. Take the Jamaican installer checklist to that conversation.
