Which solar panels will suit your roof in Jamaica?

Start with your roof: its condition, shade and exposure to wind or salt near the coast. Then compare panels that fit, perform well in the heat and have support you can reach in Jamaica.

The short version: ask how the panels will be secured, how roof leaks will be prevented and who handles a fault. The installer should provide the model details and evidence behind those answers.

Panel type

Look for a panel that fits, with a warranty you can use.

You will often see “monocrystalline” on a quote: it describes the silicon cells in the panel. Start by checking the exact model, its size and warranty. Higher efficiency means more power from the same panel area, which can help on a small roof.

What do N-type, TOPCon and other panel labels mean?

Labels such as N-type, TOPCon, PERC or heterojunction describe cell technology. Some products using newer cells have better heat coefficients or degradation warranties, but the label is not proof. Compare the actual data sheets.

High wattageUsually means a larger or more efficient module—not automatically better quality.
Bifacial glassCan help where light reaches the rear. A close-mounted module over a dark roof may gain little.
Long performance warrantyDescribes retained output. Check the separate product warranty and who will honour it in Jamaica.

Retail listings cannot tell us what Jamaican households buy most often, but they do show what installers and homeowners are being offered. We checked seven local catalogues and counted each roof-module listing once, excluding portable panels, repeated bundles and overseas import marketplaces.

JA Solar at 3 retailersIt was the only named brand repeated across three independent catalogues, making it the clearest recurring brand in this sample—not an automatic recommendation.
23 of 32 were 550 W+Most identified listing titles sat between 550 W and 710 W. A larger wattage can reduce panel count, but dimensions, weight and safe roof fit still decide whether it helps.
Bifacial at 6 of 7Six catalogues carried at least one module designed to collect light from the rear. The label is common; useful rear-side production still depends on clearance, roof reflectivity and the mounting layout.
N-type/TOPCon at 3 retailersThat technology is becoming easier to find locally, but many listings still say only “monocrystalline”. Compare the exact model’s heat coefficient, warranty and certification.
Common stock is not the same as the right panel. One JA Solar 620 W bifacial model sold locally is about 2.33 × 1.13 metres and weighs 32.5 kg. Ask the installer to show how the quoted model fits the usable roof, how it is attached and what rear-side gain—if any—has been included in the generation estimate.

Direction changes the time of production

When would your panels make the most electricity?

Illustrative clear day

A generally south-facing array favours annual output in Jamaica. East shifts generation earlier; west shifts it later. An east–west split broadens the day. That can be useful because a solar unit used at home is usually worth more than one exported under JPS Jamaica net billing.

Mostly out during the day

A west-facing section can move more generation toward late-afternoon use, but it will not cover evening use after sunset.

Home office or daytime AC

South-facing output can suit a strong midday load. Shade and roof geometry still decide the usable layout.

Morning and afternoon activity

A split east–west array spreads production. Ask the quote to show annual output and self-use—not just panel count.

Heat

How much output does the panel lose in the heat?

Panel nameplates are tested at a cell temperature of 25°C. Under strong Jamaican sun, the cells can be much hotter than the air, and module output falls as temperature rises.

On the data sheet, look for the Pmax temperature coefficient: the percentage of power lost for each degree the cells warm above the test temperature. A number closer to zero means less loss. Compare −0.30%/°C with −0.40%/°C, for example; do not compare “low temperature loss” marketing.

Coastal Jamaica

Salt attacks more than the panel.

For exposed homes in places such as Portmore, Hellshire, Negril, Montego Bay and along the north and south coasts, ask whether the exact module has IEC 61701 salt-mist testing. The standard is designed to expose module faults caused by wet, salt-rich atmospheres.

Module

Get the IEC 61701 certificate or test report for the model number—not a statement that the brand is “coastal rated”.

Racking and fasteners

Require a written material and coating specification, compatible metals and hardware sized for the intended service life.

Cables and equipment

Connectors, cable clips, isolators, inverter enclosures and earth connections also sit in the salt air. They need inspection access.

Salt-mist certification is not a whole-system certificate. It tests the module. The rails, roof hooks, bolts, wiring and inverter enclosure still need to be suitable for the site.

Common Jamaican roofs

The attachment must reach the structure.

A good module on a weak, leaking or badly detailed roof is a bad solar system. The roof should be inspected before layout is finalised, and every quote should name the mounting method.

Corrugated metal / zinc

Do not rely on the sheet alone.

Attachments need a designed connection to purlins or rafters, with compatible fasteners and properly sealed penetrations. Ask how the installer locates the structure beneath the sheet.

Concrete slab

Weight is not a hurricane design.

Loose blocks or buckets can move and create cascading failure. Require engineered positive attachment and waterproofed anchor details where the roof is penetrated.

Shingle or tile

Ask how the roof will stay watertight.

Connections should reach the rafters or designed structure. Flashing and tile-compatible hooks matter; sealant by itself is not a durable roof detail.

Fix the roof first. Panels are intended to stay for decades. If the zinc, membrane, rafters or waterproofing are near replacement, dealing with them first avoids paying to remove and reinstall the array. Use the installer checklist to make sure the survey records the roof condition and mounting method.

Hurricane resilience

There is no single “hurricane-proof” panel.

Caribbean post-storm inspections found both surviving and failed rooftop systems under extreme winds. The difference was not one logo: structural connections, clamps, fasteners, roof condition, edge zones and quality control all mattered.

1. Inspect the roofConfirm the existing roof and its structure match the design assumptions before installation.
2. Calculate for the siteWind design must account for building height, exposure, roof geometry and topography—not only a national wind speed.
3. Keep panels inside the roof envelopeNo module should overhang a pitched-roof edge. Corners and edges experience higher uplift.
4. Secure panels to the building structureRMI does not recommend ballasted-only rooftop systems in hurricane regions. Connections must reach the building structure.
5. Specify retention and fastenersAsk for independent module clamps or through-bolting, correct clamp zones, vibration-resistant hardware and recorded torque.
6. Match module load to the calculationRMI identifies a 5,400 Pa front-load target as an available high-load option, but the engineer's calculation decides what the site needs.
Jamaica-specific check: the draft 2020 Jamaica Residential Code requires rooftop PV and supports to resist applicable wind loads and requires roof penetrations to be flashed and sealed. Ask the installer who is responsible for the structural design and for preserving the roof warranty.

Warranty and replacement

A 25-year promise is only useful if someone answers.

Product warranty

Covers specified defects for a stated period. Read exclusions for corrosion, installation, extreme weather and transport.

Performance warranty

Promises a minimum retained output curve. It is not the same as a replacement warranty for a failed frame, glass or junction box.

Local route

Get the Jamaican supplier or installer process in writing: who tests a suspected fault, who removes the module, and who pays freight and labour?

Also ask whether the exact model is likely to remain available. One differently sized replacement can disrupt a tightly packed array even if its wattage looks similar.

Questions homeowners ask

Solar-panel FAQ for Jamaica

Is N-type always better than P-type in Jamaica?

Not automatically. N-type products often advertise strong heat and degradation performance, but compare the exact temperature coefficient, degradation warranty, certifications, mechanical loads, price and local support. A cell-technology label cannot replace the data sheet.

Should every roof face south?

No. South generally favours annual output in Jamaica, but east or west roofs can still be useful, particularly when production better matches household use. Shade, available area, roof condition and structural attachment can matter more than a modest orientation difference.

Are larger-wattage panels better?

Not by themselves. A higher wattage may come from a physically larger module. Compare watts per square metre, dimensions, weight, load rating and how the module fits the safe roof area.

Does IEC 61215 mean a panel will last 25 years?

No. IEC 61215 is design qualification and type-approval testing intended to identify characteristics and resistance to outdoor stresses. It is valuable evidence, but it is not a service-life guarantee for every installation.

Can I add panels right to the roof edge?

That is a structural-design question, but Caribbean hurricane guidance advises keeping modules within the pitched-roof envelope and avoiding the highest-pressure roof zones. Do not let a sales target decide the edge setback.

Will panels keep the house running when JPS goes down?

Not on their own. A normal grid-connected system shuts down during an outage for safety. Backup requires a suitable multi-mode or hybrid inverter, battery, transfer equipment and a design that can operate safely away from the grid.
