This is a first check, not an installation design. Large windows, high ceilings, poor sealing, more than two regular occupants, cooking equipment or an open doorway can change the required capacity. Ask the supplier to show the heat-load calculation rather than sizing from floor area alone.

What “inverter AC” means

It can slow down instead of repeatedly stopping and starting.

A conventional air conditioner commonly runs its compressor at full output, stops when the thermostat is satisfied, then starts again. An inverter AC uses electronic controls to vary compressor speed and hold the room closer to the chosen temperature.

That can reduce electricity use, noise and temperature swings—especially when the unit is correctly sized and runs for long periods. It does not mean the AC connects directly to solar panels, and the word inverter by itself is not an efficiency guarantee.

Why Jamaica changes the answer

A west-facing bedroom and a shaded room are not the same job.

Afternoon sun

Walls, windows and the roof keep adding heat.

Top-floor rooms and west-facing glass can need more cooling than the same floor area on the shaded side of the house. Curtains, roof treatment and sealing can reduce the job before you buy a larger machine.

Humidity

Too large can still feel uncomfortable.

An oversized unit may reach the thermostat quickly and stop before removing enough moisture. Bigger is not automatically cooler in the way that matters.

Electricity supply

Confirm the exact voltage and circuit.

Do not assume an imported unit suits the property's supply. Have a qualified electrical professional confirm voltage, frequency, breaker, cable, isolator, earthing and surge protection.

Installation

A good unit can perform badly on a poor installation.

Pipe length, refrigerant charge, drainage, airflow, outdoor-unit ventilation and service access all affect performance. Get the installation scope and warranty responsibility in writing.

AC, solar and batteries

When you cool the room matters almost as much as how long.

During sunny hours

A suitable solar system may serve much of the AC demand directly. That can be more valuable than exporting the same electricity at a lower net-billing rate.

After sunset

The panels are no longer carrying the AC directly. The energy must come from JPS or a battery, after allowing for the battery's reserve and conversion losses.

During an outage

Battery capacity determines duration; inverter and battery power determine whether the AC can start and run alongside the household's other selected loads.

Do not size a battery from “12,000 BTU” alone. Use the exact AC electrical input, expected operating pattern and starting behaviour. Then decide whether cooling one room is an essential outage load or an expensive comfort load.

What size air conditioner do I need for a bedroom in Jamaica?

Start with floor area, then adjust for direct sun, ceiling height, windows, occupants and equipment that adds heat. Use the estimator for a first range, but ask the supplier to show a heat-load calculation before buying.

Does an inverter air conditioner work directly from solar panels?

No. “Inverter AC” describes variable-speed compressor control. The unit still needs a suitable household supply or a correctly designed solar inverter and battery system.

Is a bigger BTU air conditioner better?

Not necessarily. An oversized AC may cool quickly and stop before removing enough humidity. A correctly sized unit usually gives better comfort and more predictable operation.

How much electricity does an AC use overnight?

It depends on the model's electrical input and how hard the compressor works after the room cools. The estimator provides a range; an energy monitor or the exact model's tested energy data gives a better answer for an installed unit.

Can solar panels run an air conditioner in Jamaica?

Yes, when the solar and electrical system is designed for the AC's running and starting demand. Daytime cooling can use solar directly; overnight cooling normally requires JPS or sufficient battery capacity.

Should I leave an inverter AC running all night?

That is a comfort and cost choice, not a universal efficiency rule. A well-sized inverter unit can reduce output after the room settles, but a lower thermostat setting, open room or poorly insulated roof can keep it working hard.
