When JPS goes off, what do you need the battery to carry?

Start with the fridge, lights, fans or other equipment you need most. How much the battery stores helps determine how long it lasts. The inverter and battery power limits determine what can run together.

This estimates time, not starting ability. A pump or air conditioner can demand much more power when it starts. The battery, its controls and the inverter all have to support that surge.

Battery and inverter

They have to work as one system.

The battery stores DC electricity. The inverter controls charging, turns stored energy into household electricity and decides what happens when JPS is available or down.

“48 volt lithium” is not a compatibility guarantee. Ask the installer to confirm in writing that the exact battery and inverter models work together, including their controls and software.

When JPS is up

The inverter can use solar in the home, charge the battery and manage imports or exports according to the system settings.

When JPS is down

A correctly designed system disconnects from the grid and powers only its backup circuits. A battery alone cannot do this safely.

When the battery is full

Extra solar serves the home, exports under net billing if approved, or is reduced if there is nowhere else for it to go.

Battery type

For most new home systems, start by comparing LFP batteries.

Lithium iron phosphate—usually written LFP or LiFePO₄—is now a common choice for stationary home storage. It can offer a long cycle life and avoids the regular maintenance associated with traditional lead-acid banks.

The chemistry name is only a starting point. Compare the usable capacity, continuous power, warranty, safety evidence, inverter compatibility and who will support it in Jamaica.

Backup value is only part of the story.

Use solar later instead of exporting it.

Electricity used at home is generally worth more than electricity exported under net billing. A battery can move midday surplus into the evening, but its extra cost can still lengthen payback.

Outages and storms

Plan for a cut-back household.

Fridge, lights, communications, fans and water are easier to sustain than every AC, heater and cooker. Decide the essentials before asking for “whole-house backup”.

Heat and weather

The installation location matters.

Keep the equipment within its stated temperature range, out of direct sun and away from flooding or driven rain. Coastal homes also need suitable enclosures and connections.

Jamaican supply

List the appliances you need to keep running.

The inverter—not the battery—creates household AC power. The backup design must provide the correct voltage, frequency, phase and neutral for the circuits selected.

A battery forming part of a qualifying solar PV system can be included under the published rules. Later additions and older systems need more care.

Import-duty suspension

Jamaica Customs says qualifying rechargeable batteries for renewable-energy systems have a CET suspension from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2027. That does not dictate a retailer's final price.

Safety and local support

Do not buy a loose collection of compatible-looking boxes.

The Bureau of Standards Jamaica currently publishes a public approved-inverter list; we could not find an equivalent public approved-battery list. That makes documentation for the complete battery-and-inverter combination especially important.

Ask for recognised product and system safety evidence for the exact models. For example, UL 9540 evaluates an energy-storage system including its battery and power-conversion equipment, while UL 9540A examines thermal-runaway behaviour. These are useful forms of evidence, not a claim about which standard a Jamaican authority will require for your particular installation.

How long will a 10 kWh solar battery last?

It depends on the average load. After a 20% reserve and a simple 10% allowance for conversion losses, this page estimates about 7.2 kWh delivered. That is about 24 hours at 300 W, roughly ten hours at 700 W, or under five hours at 1.5 kW.

Will a solar battery run an air conditioner?

It may, but check more than capacity. The battery, battery-management system and inverter must supply the AC's running and starting power. Runtime also changes with room size, temperature, thermostat setting and efficiency. Use the Jamaica air-conditioner guide to estimate the room's cooling load and electricity use first.

Can I add any battery to a hybrid inverter?

No. Matching the broad voltage is not enough. The exact battery must be supported by the inverter's voltage and current limits, communication protocol and firmware.

Does a battery keep solar working during a JPS outage?

Only in a system designed to disconnect safely from the grid and operate selected backup circuits. Confirm black-start and solar-recharging behaviour; a battery by itself does not provide those functions.

Is a bigger battery always better?

No. Extra capacity can be valuable for long outages, but a battery that is rarely used adds cost and may be difficult for a small solar array to recharge. Size around the loads and outage duration you actually care about.

Should I buy a battery now or add it later?

If adding one later is likely, choose an inverter and electrical layout that explicitly support the intended battery family and expansion method. Also compare tax-credit eligibility for a later upgrade with buying the complete system initially.
