The inverter turns electricity from your panels into power your appliances can use. Your first choice is whether you want lower bills, backup when JPS goes off, or both. That decides which type to discuss with an installer.

Inverter types

The right category comes before the right brand.

Usually simplest for bill reduction

Grid-connected string inverter

One inverter manages groups of connected panels, called strings. It is usually efficient and economical, but a normal grid-connected system shuts down during a JPS outage for safety.

Ask about:how shade affects output, whether the panels match the inverter and what net billing requires.
Solar plus battery

Hybrid or multimode inverter

Coordinates panels, a battery and grid supply. Some accept a generator. “Hybrid” describes capability; it does not promise whole-house backup or compatibility with every battery.

Ask about:what stays on in an outage, any delay before backup starts and which batteries it supports.
No dependable grid

Off-grid inverter/charger

Designed around batteries and local generation rather than exporting to the utility. It must be sized for worst-case loads, surge and several low-solar days—not average daily use alone.

Ask about:how long stored energy lasts, what switches off when it runs low and how the system restarts.
Electronics at each panel

Microinverters

Each panel has its own small inverter. They can help on complex or partly shaded roofs, but place more electronics in Jamaican heat and make roof access part of the service plan.

Ask about:Jamaican supply compatibility, outage behaviour and who pays for repairs that need roof access.

Power optimisers are different: they manage individual modules but normally still feed a central inverter. Commercial and utility systems may use large string or central inverters and need a project-specific three-phase design. Match the inverter to the panel design and, where backup matters, the battery specification.

The phrase “JPS approved” needs unpacking

Check the model and the permission to connect.

For a system that will export under JPS Jamaica net billing, three separate checks matter. Sellers often compress them into “JPS approved”, which hides the important details.

    Find the exact model on the BSJ list

    Match every letter, number and suffix. Approval of one Deye, LuxPower, Growatt or other model does not approve the whole brand.

    Include BSJ evidence in the Ministry application

    The official net-billing instructions require the inverter to be listed by BSJ and ask for its certificate or report evidence.

    Wait for written JPS approval

    Being on the BSJ list is not permission to connect or export. The installation, protection and metering process still has to be approved.

Approval is not a quality ranking. It does not tell you whether an inverter has good local warranty support, can start your water pump, works with your battery, or will back up the circuits you care about.

Jamaican electrical fit

Will it run your appliances on Jamaican electricity?

Ask the installer to confirm that the exact inverter model will run your appliances, both with JPS on and during backup. A unit bought overseas may use different electrical settings.

List equipment such as lights, a fridge, a water pump and AC. The installer must check their supply needs; “it provides 240 volts” does not establish that it can also power your 110 V appliances.

See the voltage, frequency and wiring details

Jamaica’s supply frequency is 50 Hz: the electrical cycle repeats 50 times a second. Typical homes have single-phase service with 110 V and 220 V appliances; businesses may have three-phase service. The installer must match the equipment to the actual supply.

A 220 V or 240 V backup output may need a suitable split-phase and neutral arrangement, or an engineered transformer arrangement, to supply 110 V circuits. Ask the electrician to show this in the design.

Sizing without mixing the units

Four numbers answer four different questions.

Panels · kWpThe combined rated power of the panels, measured under test conditions.

Ask the installer to confirm that the quoted panels and their wiring arrangement fit the inverter’s input limits.

Inverter · kW or kVAHow much power can be supplied at once.

Ask what it can run together, whether hot conditions reduce that power and whether it can start your pump or AC.

Battery · kWhHow much usable energy can be stored.

It influences duration, not whether the inverter can start a pump or run several large loads together.

Battery power limit · kWHow fast the battery can charge or discharge.

Even a battery with plenty of stored energy may not supply enough power for several large appliances at once.

A 10 kW inverter is not a 10 kWh battery and does not mean ten hours of backup. Ask the quote to show the largest simultaneous load, the motor starting loads and the usable battery energy separately.

Outages and backup

Ask for a written list of what can run together.

During an outage, a conventional grid-tied system normally shuts down. A backup system must disconnect safely from JPS and form a stable supply for selected loads. Decide what stays on before choosing the inverter.

Essential circuits

Fridge, lights, internet, security, fans and selected outlets are easier to design for and usually extend battery duration.

Starting loads

Water pumps, refrigerators and some air conditioners briefly demand more than their running power. Confirm surge power and duration.

Heavy loads

Water heaters, electric cookers, large AC units and pool pumps can empty a battery quickly or exceed backup output when combined.

Using a generator too? Ask how the supplies switch safely.

Heat, salt and service

The installation location is part of the specification.

Heat and airflow

Inverters reduce output or shut down when hot. Get the operating-temperature range and derating curve, then preserve the required clearance and shade.

Rain and coastal air

An IP rating describes water and dust ingress—not complete salt-corrosion resistance. Keep terminals, isolators and cable entries appropriate and inspectable.

Surges and grounding

Ask the electrician to specify AC and DC surge protection, bonding and grounding for the site. A Wi-Fi surge strip is not system protection.

Local recovery

Get owner access to monitoring, the local warranty route, firmware responsibility and the plan if the installer or imported model disappears.

Questions homeowners ask

Solar-inverter FAQ for Jamaica

What does “JPS-approved inverter” mean?

It is shorthand, not one approval. For net billing, check the exact model on the BSJ approved-inverter list, provide the required evidence with the Ministry application, and obtain written JPS approval before connection or export.

Will a hybrid inverter power my home when JPS goes down?

Only when it is installed with a compatible battery, a correctly designed backup output and safe separation from the grid. Ask which circuits are on the backup panel and whether the system can restart from battery or solar after a shutdown.

Can I use a 60 Hz inverter in Jamaica?

Do not assume so. Jamaica's public supply is 50 Hz. Match the exact model's output frequency, voltage and phase to the intended installation and verify its current BSJ status.

Is a 10 kW inverter the same as a 10 kWh battery?

No. The inverter's kW is a power limit; battery kWh is stored energy. Backup duration also depends on usable battery capacity and the loads, while starting motors depends on instantaneous and surge power.

If a brand is on the BSJ list, are all its models approved?

No. Approval is model-specific. A different suffix can indicate a different voltage, frequency, power rating or regional design. Match the model on the equipment label, quotation and official list character for character.

Which inverter brand is best in Jamaica?

There is no responsible single answer. Begin with the exact BSJ status and electrical fit, then compare battery compatibility, local technical support, warranty labour, spare availability, heat derating, monitoring access and the installer's demonstrated competence with that model.
